Q. What can I do with a modem or DSL modem with a cable and is it possible to host my website on my own computer?

Ans: Definitely it is possible to host a website on your own computer however, first of all, you need to consult with your local ISP. Generally, the local Internet service providers will not allow you to use your DSL to host a web server, they have such firewalls to block traffic. It is the same with regard to email servers.

So to make sure your website is accessible to a suitable speed, you will have a more expensive line so that it can withstand the traffic of your website. On the other hand, it would quite slow because the width of the strips is limited upstream on DSL lines. And last but not least, you must have enough knowledge of system administration, networking, computer security, etc …

Q. Can I keep my domain name in case of a change of host?

Ans: In general, yes. However, it depends on your website’s files that require the most data transfer speed. First, check the quality and compression of all images, most can be optimized by using an appropriate image editing software such as PhotoShop.

You can play with the option to export pictures and have smaller files. Also, check your HTML files. There are many optimization programs available that reduce the HTML file size by removing unnecessary spaces and new lines. Check if you have the audio and videos, and try to optimize their size with the appropriate media editor.

Ans: Yes, you can. You can have your own scripts and programs written in PHP, Perl, ruby, python, etc. Running on the server. You can also run cron jobs so you can use them to run a program at a specific date and time. This means that making some routine activities simple such as backups, email messages, etc… can be fully automated.

Q. Could I use JavaScript, Flash, and Java Applets Pages on my website?

Ans: There are many ways to transfer your website files to your hosting account. The most preferable way is FTP. Once you sign up the hosting account you will receive the FTP login details. And there are many FTP programs available like WS_FTP, CuteFTP, SmartFTP, Filezilla, etc… The second option is to use is file manager which usually comes with a control panel.

Q. How much bandwidth do I need?

Ans: It is hard to say because it depends on several factors such as the number of visitors on your website each month, the average size of your web pages with all pictures, videos, etc … that are included in the web pages. Please keep in mind that your site will gain more and more popularity over time and you have to check additional options.

Q. If I have a popular website with a large amount of database and tons of web traffic and I’ve noticed that you are not offering unlimited bandwidth and space then why should I choose your hosting instead of those who offer unlimited plans at a cheap cost?

Ans: Nothing is unlimited in this world so don’t believe web hosting is an exceptional thing. You get what you pay. If you pay peanuts you always get monkeys. Those companies who offer unlimited plans misguide people. If you don’t believe me, then read those companies’ TOS, you will find rules that clearly mention “if you use too many resources your site and account will be suspended”.
