What is ASP.NET? (Active Server Pages)

If you manage a VPS, cloud server, or dedicated server with cPanel & WHM, checking the license should be part of normal server maintenance. A license problem can appear after a migration, an IP change, a renewal, or a network outage. It can also explain why cPanel reports errors such as License File Expired or Cannot Read License File.
This guide explains how to check a cPanel license in two ways: through cPanel’s online verification page and from the server command line. It also covers the commands that cPanel recommends, common causes of verification failures, and the steps to take when the license is expired or cannot be reached.
Before you begin: The command-line steps require root access. Run them only on a server that you own or administer. Do not paste unknown license scripts into a terminal or share your server credentials with another person.
A cPanel license is associated with the server’s licensed IP address. If that address changes, the server may no longer match the license record. A quick verification can confirm whether the issue is the license itself or something local, such as DNS, firewall rules, or an incorrect system clock.
It is especially useful to check the license in these situations:
Regular checks are also useful for hosting providers that manage several servers. They make it easier to identify a license issue before it turns into a customer-facing service interruption.
The browser method is the simplest option when you know the server’s public IP address. It does not require SSH access, and it can be used from a separate computer.
Using the cPanel License Verification Page
cPanel’s support documentation recommends entering the server IP on this page. If a partner provides your license, the result may identify the partner package as well as the cPanel product. The page can list licenses for different products separately, so check the cPanel entry rather than assuming that an active CloudLinux or another product license also means the cPanel license is active.
From an SSH session or the Terminal in WHM, run:
curl -L https://cpanel.net/myip
The command returns the public IP address that cPanel can see. Copy that address into the verification page.
On systems where you want to compare the address used for different cPanel services, cPanel’s troubleshooting documentation also lists these commands:
curl -w ‘\n’ -s http://myip.cpanel.net/v1.0/
curl -w ‘\n’ -s http://myip.cpanel.net:2089/v1.0/
Use the result that corresponds to the server’s public licensing connection. If the addresses differ, investigate the server’s routing, NAT, or provider configuration before trying to change the license.
The exact wording can vary, but the result will normally tell you whether a current license is associated with the IP address. Treat the result as follows:
If the license is active in the browser but WHM still reports an error, the problem may be local. Continue with the command-line checks below to test connectivity, DNS resolution, and the server clock.
The command-line method is useful when you already have root SSH access or when WHM is unavailable. It asks the cPanel licensing service to verify the server’s current license status.
Basic Command
Connect to the server as root:
ssh root@SERVER_IP
Replace SERVER_IP with the server’s public IP address. After logging in, run:
/usr/local/cpanel/cpkeyclt
The cpkeyclt script contacts cPanel’s licensing servers and verifies the system’s license status. cPanel’s API documentation identifies this as the command used to perform the license check.
A successful run may return no message. That behavior is documented by cPanel. If the command takes more than a few seconds, or if it returns an error, check the network and system settings described in the troubleshooting section.
Run the Command Correctly
Use the full path and run it as root:
id -u
/usr/local/cpanel/cpkeyclt
The first command should return 0, which confirms that the current shell has root privileges. Do not run the command with sudo unless your server’s sudo configuration is known and you understand how it is set up. The safest cPanel-supported approach is to log in as root or open a root shell first.
A failed verification does not always mean that the license has expired. Work through the checks below in order. Start with the IP address, then test the server’s access to cPanel’s licensing service.
Common Causes of an Invalid or Unavailable License
First, find the IP cPanel sees:
curl -L https://cpanel.net/myip
Then enter the returned address at:
https://verify.cpanel.net/app/verify
If the address is not the one shown in your hosting panel, check whether the server is behind NAT or has multiple public interfaces. Contact the provider before moving a license to a different address.
After confirming the IP, run:
/usr/local/cpanel/cpkeyclt
Run it once and allow it time to complete. Do not start several copies at the same time. If the command hangs or takes unusually long, move to the connectivity checks instead of repeatedly launching it.
Check whether the server can resolve cPanel’s licensing hostname:
host auth.cpanel.net
If the command returns a resolution error, inspect /etc/resolv.conf, the resolver configured by your operating system, and any provider-level DNS restrictions. cPanel specifically lists auth.cpanel.net as the hostname to check when investigating license connectivity.
Display the current system time:
date
Compare it with the actual time and time zone. If the server clock is significantly wrong, correct the time using your operating system’s time-synchronization method, then run cpkeyclt again. cPanel includes an incorrect system date or time among the causes of license-file errors.
The server must be able to make outbound connections to cPanel’s services. Check local firewall rules, cloud security groups, and any network policy enforced by the hosting provider. If outbound HTTPS or other cPanel-required traffic is blocked, the license may appear unavailable even when it is active.
Do not open every port as a quick fix. Review the provider’s current cPanel network requirements and allow only the required outbound traffic. If you cannot change the upstream firewall, ask the hosting provider to confirm that licensing connections are permitted.
If the verification page shows no valid license, or if the license is managed by your hosting company, contact the provider. Ask them to confirm:
If you bought the license directly from cPanel and the issue remains after the checks above, use the cPanel Store or open a cPanel support request. cPanel’s documentation directs customers to its support channels when the standard troubleshooting steps do not resolve the error.
The verification page can tell you that a license is expired, but it does not renew the license. Renewal depends on who issued it.
After the renewal or reassignment is complete, run:
/usr/local/cpanel/cpkeyclt
Then check the IP again on the official verification page. cPanel states that the license activates when it is purchased or renewed, but the local server may still need to refresh its license information.
Your license plan determines the number of cPanel accounts supported by the license and where the license can be used. cPanel’s current pricing page lists the following plans:
A trial or partner-provided license may appear differently from a retail plan. The verification result and the WHM Marketplace are better sources for the license actually assigned to your server than an assumption based on the number of websites hosted there.
Do not confuse the number of websites with the number of cPanel accounts. One cPanel account can host multiple websites, depending on the server configuration and cPanel features in use.
Use these commands for a normal license check:
# Find the public IP used by the server
curl -L https://cpanel.net/myip
# Refresh and verify the cPanel license as root
/usr/local/cpanel/cpkeyclt
# Test DNS resolution for cPanel licensing
host auth.cpanel.net
# Check the server date and time
date
The commands above are read-only checks or a license refresh. Avoid commands copied from forums that download and execute a script directly from the internet, especially when the source and contents are unclear.
Checking a cPanel license is straightforward when you use the official verification page and the supported cpkeyclt command. Start by confirming the server’s public IP, then verify that IP online. If the result is correct but the server still reports a problem, check DNS resolution, outbound connectivity, the hostname, and the system clock.
When a license is genuinely expired, renew it through the cPanel Store or contact the provider that issued it. After the renewal, run cpkeyclt again and repeat the browser check. Keeping these steps in your server maintenance notes can save time during migrations, renewals, and unexpected WHM errors.
