Terms Relating to Web Hosting (Series S, T)

SLP – Serial Line Internet Protocol. A standard protocol used to establish connections over dial-ups.

SSL – Secure Socket layer. A method used to encrypt data from a computer to a web server.

STM – Synchronous Transfer Mode. A transmission process by which information is transmitted sequentially with respect to time.

T-3 – A term usually to represent the connection transfer speed of 45Mbps. It contains 642 individual channels to carry voice or data. This carrier is often used by large businesses or ISPs that demand a large amount of bandwidth.

TCP/IP – Transfer Control Protocol/Internet Protocol. This communication protocol suite used on networks such as LAN, WAN, CAN, and the Internet. This protocol was an important factor in making the Internet possible to accessible by millions.

Telnet – A protocol that is part of the TCP/IP suite. It allows users to remotely connect to computers on a network.

Traffic – The number of bytes transferred from one computer to another.
