In the world of virtualization, it is not only about virtual machines but<\/span> also switches. Moreover, VMware offers the \u201cvSwitch<\/span>\u201d and Hyper-V itself offers \u201cVirtual Switches\u201d. Today, we will see how to create and configure a vSwitch<\/span> under Hyper-V hypervisor.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

These virtual switches are layer 2, that is to say. It determines the path to taken by an Ethernet packet using the MAC addresses of the devices.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The integration of Hyper-V in Windows 8 means. The hypervisor<\/span> can be present on<\/span> different types of machines, not just servers, but especially on laptops. Virtual Switch Types<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Hyper-V provides the ability to create three different types of virtual switches, here they are:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

External:<\/strong> As the name implies, this type used to link the virtual switch to a physical network card in your machine to communicate with other network computers. In other words, all the machines connected to the virtual switch have this type of access to the physical network like any physical host.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Internal: <\/strong>Unlike this type of virtual switch makes it possible to connect with the physical network, we stay in-house, that is to say, that communication possible only between virtual machines connected to this type of switch. However, the machine acting as a Hyper-V server will be the only physical machine that can communicate with an internal VM virtual switch.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Private: <\/strong>Resumes the same principle as the \u201cinner\u201d kind, except that here the communication with the physical host acts as a Hyper-V server is not possible. The communication is exclusively inter-VM.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

When creating a switch type, the choice is not final, because we can switch from one type to another quite easily from the configuration of the virtual switch.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Virtual Switch Creation<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

    \r\n
  1. Virtual switches<\/span> management done via the Hyper-V Manager. To get there, first click on the \u201cManage Virtual Switch\u201d, available in the \u201cActions\u201d menu on the right side of the console.<\/li>\r\n

  4. Now first, click on your virtual switch in the left menu to access the settings. To start slowly<\/span>, give the name you want by filling in the field \u201cName\u201d. And eventually, enter a description in the \u201cZone Notes\u201d.<\/li>\r\n
  5. Then you will see the \u201cZone Connection Type\u201d, which is equivalent to selecting whether a virtual switch type is \u201cExternal\u201d or \u201cInternal\u201d or \u201cPrivate\u201d so at any time if you want to change the type, you need to make a change<\/span> here.<\/li>\r\n
  6. Regarding the option \u201cAllow system management operating to share this network adapter\u201d. When selected, you will allowed access to the physical machine with the role of Hyper-V through the card used by the external network (that is to say the one selected in the drop-down list).     Extensions<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

It means you can add extensions to your virtual switch which then becomes an \u201cextensible virtual switch\u201d; this is in order to allow the development of extensions that will emulate the functionality of a physical switch.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

    You will see that by default there are two options \u2013 \u201cNDIS Microsoft Capture\u201d. Which is a test extension that enables the capture driver NDIS Microsoft in order to capture network traffic. As for the extension \u201cMicrosoft Windows Filtering Platform\u201d.     Address Range of MAC<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

    In the Virtual Switch Manager, in the left menu under the selection \u201cGlobal Network Settings\u201d you will see \u201cMAC Address RANGE\u201d, click it. In the middle section, you will see two fields \u201cMinimum\u201d and \u201cMaximum\u201d. In fact, you define a range of MAC addresses is say, a beginning range (minimum) and endpoint (maximum) for the MAC address to assigned to virtual network cards.
