Definitelly PHP, because I have a friend who is a wizard in PHP, so why not exploit that when you can. It's always nice to have a friend, haha! I'm so bad...

I choose PHP because it is widely supported and the open source community exploits it so much. It's easier to learn also, in my opinion.

Yes agree on that. I too usually tend to go with technologies and languages that are widely supported and have the community of people that are willing to help you. Learning is much easier that way.

The choice of which development language to use commonly comes down to two popular choices asp or php. But why one might choose one over the other? IMO, mostly people choose php due the low cost of development, availability of tools, and comfort level with the open source. Any all it depends on users choice. You should consider following chart to analyze which one meets your demands.

I agree with Rozzane. The majority of people use PHP because of the low developmental cost. But there are many other factors that encourage people to use PHP over ASP.NET and one of them is the strong community of PHP developers which is quite handy when you stuck with some issues.

Btw, if you are using PHP then make sure you are using the latest version. FYI, PHP 5.3 is now official announced as its EOL. So you have to consider PHP 5.4 or 5.5, though 5.4 will be at its EOL within 8 months so it is better upgrading to 5.5. Also PHP 5.6 is also around the corner.

ASP.Net is a very good and strong product, but because of the Microsoft’s greedy approach it’s falling behind. As PHP is an open source platform so no surprise to see many people using it, but still PHP is in the 7th position. Check this: Next Generation PHP

Although PHP is more suited to support start-up and small-sized businesses, ASP.NET is better suited to large and medium-sized businesses. While PHP is open source and available to developers for free, it has a bigger market share than ASP.NET while being paid for. ASP.NET has a decent market share in the IT industry.

                  • This open-source software is available free of cost for modifications and redistribution.
                  • PHP is extremely effective to access and communicate with various types of databases. So it is apt for web-based scripts like website content management systems.

                  • PHP is unable to solve specific problems.
                  Advantages of ASP.NET
                  • ASP.NET provides flexibility to add and remove features.
                  • It allows setting up a cross-platform and open-source framework in a simple manner.
                  • ASP.NET is seamlessly compatible with other .NET frameworks.
                  • It informs developers of any mistakes they make in coding before compilation.
                  • ASP.NET supports all programming languages. Also, it works well with either app or C#.
                  • It is a great platform for building enterprise applications.
                  • ASP.NET provides a lot of pre-coded options that facilitate fast development.
                  • It provides a remarkable user interface for developers.
                  Disadvantages of ASP.NET
                  • Developers using ASP.NET face problems like difficulty in making changes and documentation gaps.
                  • The framework is not simple and easy to understand.
                  • ASP.NET is more expensive than PHP.
                  • It offers less community support than PHP due to less number of developers associated with its community.
                  • ASP.NET runs only on a Microsoft server.
                  Regards,
                  Vineeta
