How to Upload File in WS FTP ?

Uploading your web site to a web server is actually a very easy process. In fact, it is like copying files between different folders on your local computer. The only difference is that files are being copied from your local computer to a web server the remote computer. Files are copied from a local computer to a remote computer over the internet using a special protocol known as FTP . In order to do this, you will need to use a software application known as an FTP client. There are lots of FTP clients about but the one we are using here is called WS FTP LE. The “LE” stands for limited edition and this version of WS FTP is a cut-down version of it’s big brother WS_FTP Pro. However, the LE version is free for personal and academic use. If you wish, you can download this version of WS FTP LE from the WS FTP web site. SmartFTP.The WS FTP client has been around for a while and the free “LE” version is very popular with universities and schools . Many ISPs (internet service providers) also distribute it for use by their users. However, it’s clunky interface is now looking a bit dated. There are newer, free FTP clients around such as SmartFTP, that use the familiar “Explorer” style interface. Having said that, functionally, WS_FTP LE does everything that you might want if you just need to upload and maintain a web site on a remote server.

You can start WS FTP LE by just double-clicking the program icon. When this application launches, you will see the Session Properties dialogue box. The first thing you need to do is to enter 3 pieces of information in the toolbar at the top of the application window.

a) Enter the address for the server you want to contact in the “Host Name/Address” box. For example, if you are uploading files to an account at bodhost UK, the address would be ftp.bodhost.co.uk

b) Now enter your member name in the “User ID” box. This is the name which you chose when you set up your account.

c)  Now enter your password in the “Password” box.
At last, ensure that the Host Type is set to “Automatic detect”. Your Session Properties dialogue box should now look something like the one on the right.

Now you are ready to connect to your web host. Click the “OK” button.
