An Application Server is a server that has an ability to run web applications. That is to say applications to handle incoming web request, and generate an appropriate response. An application server has a role distinct from that of a web server. These are two essential components and both Tomcat can do.

A Tomcat Java application server can generate HTML response to a request after making a number of operations (connection to a database, an LDAP directory …). For the client (usually a web browser), there is no difference between a static web page: it still receives the HTML language ET to only understand how the response made to server-side exchange.

Requests for the client do not differ either if it wants to access a static resource or a web application, it still uses a URL in the same format (standard HTTP).

  • The customer sends a request (ie calling a URL) to a resource request to the server. Example:
  • http://bodhost.com/. He Does not know the answer here if will be received IS static (simple HTML page) or dynamic (generated by a web application). In our case, that this is an application meets at welcome on the server bodhost.com.
  • On the server side, the web server (eg Apache) that processes incoming HTTP requests. Therefor it deals with all applications, They require a static or dynamic resource. Only one HTTP server does not know answer to requests for static resources. It Can Only return HTML pages, images, etc … existing ones.
  • Thus, if the HTTP server finds that the received request is for the application server, it sends it to HTML. Both are connected by a channel named connector.
  • The application server (eg Tomcat) receives the request in turn. Tomcat itself is able to execute piece of the application (the servlet ) which is for the query, based on the URL. This is done from the server side Configuration.
  • Tomcat Java application server is an operation: representing a query, the other representing the response. The servlet can now work, and generate the response to the request. This May involve the consultation of data sources such as databases.
  • Once the response is generated, the application server sends it back through the connector web server. And if ET recovers itself for a static resource, it simply delegates the recovery of the response to generate it properly.
  • Now the simple task remains to understand HTML code by a browser as it is. And the HTTP server can return the response to the client to read it accurately.

Web server / application server

Remember the web server and application server are two separate things. These two components are needed on the actual server side, because they depend on each other. How? The application server can not handle HTTP request and the web server does not know how to run applications. These two components are essential and they should not be separated. Therefore to handle both simple HTTP requests (static resources) and web applications it needs to be operated independently. The idea is to change the connector, including one to use HTTP request instead of queries sorted from the server.

Note: Choose a hosting plan that offer dedicated resources for Tomcat such as VPS, Cloud Server Hosting, Hyper-V VPS, Dedicated Server Hosting, etc … )

In many conversations with our potential clients, I often encountered a common question: “What is the difference between FTP and WebDAV?” There seems to be confusion about the differences between the two protocols. So I thought it would be a good topic to cover in this Knowledgebase blog.

Q. What is a WebDAV?

Ans: WebDAV consists to web based distributed authentication and versioning, in other words a set of extensions to hypertext transfer protocol (http) which allows users to edit and cope up the files cooperatively on remote web servers. A key characteristic of this protocol is the ability to lock files to prevent data overwritten by another user. It also supports  XML properties so you can access file data, author, modified data files, and manipulation of the namespces, allowing resources to be copied or moved.

Q. What is a FTP?

Ans: As we all know it consists to a file transfer protocol, a simple network protocol based on IP, which allows users transfer files from personal computers to servers and servers to personal computer. In simple words we can define, FTP is based on client and server architecture. A FTP client initiates a connection to a remote computer running on the FTP server software. Once connected, the client can send and receive copies of files. To connect to an FTP server, the client usually requires a user_name and password. There are also public FTP archives, follows a special convention that accepts a user_name “anonymous”.

Q. How Many File Transfer Protocols Currently Available?

Ans: There are several file transfer protocols available such as:

FTP – Runs on TCP port 21 and available since the 1970. Mostly called as a plain FTP.

FTPS – It means FTP over TLS and SSL. Frequently called as a secure or protected FTP, which runs on TCP port 21 or 990.

SFTP – This form stands for SSH File Transfer Protocol, and it runs over an SSH session, normally on TCP port 22. The protocol has been around since the 1990s.

FTP supports two modes of data transfer, text or binary, and most often the default plain text. Contrary to WebDAV, FTP does not support locking files automatically, which can lead to users accessing the same file and potentially overwriting the changes to the file by the original user.

SRT Web Drive: A FTP client that supports FTP, FTPS, SFTP, Amazon S3 and WebDAV.

Q. What is a SRT GroupDrive Collaboration Suite?

Ans: It runs on a protected webdav server and offers users the ability to store, collaborate, share and access their files from anywhere via a web browser. It also allows you to map a drive letter to your personal computer to easily access stored files on the server GroupDrive. In addition, it offers an excellent optional way to use a VPN for your remote workers.

Network Attached Storage(NAS) :

The NAS is stands for Network Attached Storage. NAS appliances work as pure file servers which are controlled by their own integrated network operating system. The memory is organised through file sharing, meaning that access to data is only possible at file system level.

Storage Area Networks(SAN) :

SAN stands for  Storage Area Network. It also includes iSCSI. SAN is the technology which sometimes is also referred to as IPSAN or Storage over IP for storage networks, dictates the operation of direct storage protocols natively via IP.  It works by encapsulating SCSI data into TCP/IP packets and transporting them via IP networks. Then an SCSI router transports the encapsulated SCSI commands to the corresponding target system based on existing mapping tables. This way, without setting up separate storage devices, iSCSI allows access to the storage network via a virtual end-to-end connection.

Topology Of SAN And NAS :

Some important Features Of NAS:

1.Those PC who can connect with LAN(or is interconnected to the LAN through a WAN) they permit NFS, CIFS or HTTP protocol to connect to a NAS and share files.

2.NAS recognize the data with the help of  file name and byte balance, move file meta-data and also manage security, user verification, file locking.

3.NAS specifically permits information sharing between Unix and NT.

4.NAS head unit manage file system.

Some important Features of SAN :

1.Only when server class devices with SCSI Fibre Channel can connect to the SAN.

2. A SAN addresses data by disk block number and transfers raw disk blocks.

3.In case of SAN file sharing process is depends on OS.

4.In case of SAN File System is handle by servers.
