I am not sure, because I've never tried it I think, if you remove RAM while your system is running, then there are lot of chances that your OS and Hard drive will be crashed. The results of the crash would be unpredictable. That is the reason I would recommend you to do not try it anyway. If you are very eager to do experiments, then try do it in your office premises :drunk:

Hi

Well I cannot predict for PC and its RAM, HDD and other Hardware components, however, I know it is possible with server machine. Generally the box is hot swappable with RAM so there is no need to shut down server to put in the new RAM.

I believe data center edition of windows supports it, but very few people opt windows data center edition. I've got no information about other OS so won't be able to comment anything.

I think it is also possible with Linux Web Server. I am not sure, but HOT Swappable RAM functionality was contributed to Linux during 2.4, perhaps by HP. Probably few web server line of their supporting this.

I am very interested if this actually works. I would be surprised if kernel won't see the new RAM. If everything works cleanly, then I'd like to know what kind of server specification that is.

Alright, the answer is yes for such kind of thing, however, do you really think web host would take a risk for their own hardware? I would like to say trust on support team and take their word for confirmation so they can tell how hard it is.

As others suggested it is possible, but not that much easy. I am doubtful that it can be done, but high end servers of IBM and SUN can hot swap anything. However, I am doubtful about entry level system. I will prefer to shutdown server for a RAM swap, and don't have a any problem to face few minutes downtime, as they put new RAM and possibly new mother board.

Whats the idea behind removing RAM while machine is ON?

RAM can surely be removed from the machine if it is Hot-swappable [If your machine supports it, then go for it]. Before removing Hot swappable RAM from the machine, you need to first insert a secondary RAM.

I am not sure if i should write this, but removing RAM [from an inbuilt architecture], while your machine is ON will be an invitation to damage RAM, the machine and can possibly harm you as well.
