Default Scared

I gotta be honest here, I have only ever done any type of work on a linux machine, windows kind of scares me. I am not sure if its all the hype I have read in the past or not. Is anyone here still kind of new to the windows side of hosting that could give a little feedback?

IMO, it's just the preference of your requirement and nothing beyond that.

Thumbs up

Well, you do not have to be worried about it as it is not very difficult to learn Windows. You will be able to use Windows if you are using Linux. I had also used Linux but now I can use Windows also. It basically depends on your requirements as to which operating system you should choose. But if you are worried that you will not be able use Windows, then you shouldn't be. Also, bodhost.com provides 24xx7 support through Live chat, Phone support and Helpdesk so you can contact the technical support department anytime if you face any problem. Switching over to Windows wouldn't be difficult. So if you wish to switch over, go for it. Best of Luck.

For most any script or other user a windows server is rather tranparent to the end user unless you are logging in using terminal server or some such then all of a sudden it looks like windows!

I've heard that Windows servers are somewhat more insecure, not sure how true that is I've only used the ones for Linux. But unless you need to use ASP I'd avoid a Windows server as from my understanding Windows servers don't support mod_rewrite which is necessary for the SEO feature of several scripts such as Wordpress.

I don't think its its nearly as bad as some are saying. I can understand why people would say its not nearly as locked down still being new at this and all, but it worries me for some reason that I will be dumb and how can anyone be dumb with windows right? That and that it might be pricey, I am still checking some places out but I need to make a choice soon before the market (economy) effects my "extra projects money" more. :D

Well, I think if you are using Linux then you should stick with it as Linux has many benefits over Windows. The best one I think is the fact that Linux is free of cost. You do not have to pay any charges for Linux whereas Windows requires licensing fees for most of the the products. Also, Linux is compatible with most of the applications and this is not the case with Windows as mostly it supports the products of Windows only. Most of the people are now switching over to Linux instead of using Windows and if you are already using Linux then I would suggest you to stick with it.

Okay, please be patient with a tech-challenged person, but does this mean that you can't use Wordpress with a Windows server? I have used several hosting companies in the past but never concerned myself with whether it was a Linux server or a Windows server.

Let us know how your windows hosting experience goes. I think that anymore windows hosting is fine, in the past the reliability of their operating system was questionable, but I think they got there act together any more.

Well, it all comes down as to how it has been dealt with.

For e.g.

You have a windows dedicated web server with MS Exchange Server installed on it, you would probably need a windows administrator who has experience with Exchange Servers. Please note, if your hosting provider has windows technical support team who specialize in Exchange Servers, most is done instantly without you actively involving in the server configurations.

However, a bit basic is required everywhere.

Regards,

Shane Phillips

I heard from a few people using windows and linux hosts on a different company. They say that Windows seems slower and many php scripts rarely work at all. Also, the linux server had a lot more support. Any reason for this?

Well the reason why some scripts might not work is because they might require that mod_rewrite function which from my understanding, is not supported on Windows. Also, a lot of the instructions given assume you're using Linux so that might be another possibility.

Well, it's not necessary to switch from Linux to Windows, unless it's really required.

I won't recommend switching from Linux to Windows. Linux has much more benefits in comparison to Windows. First is the fact that it is open source so it does not require licensing fees. Second it is more secured and the third is the compatibility with most of the applications available. All this and much more makes Linux better in comparison to Windows. So I would recommend you to stay with Linux.
