Default VPS Hosting vs. Shared Hosting

Could someone with some knowledge give me a run-down of the pros and cons to VPS hosting? I've always used shared hosting (with few issues), but I'd like to at least know what I might be missing.

Hello,

Advantages of VPS Hosting:

Virtual server allows to run its own full-fledged operating system, and be independently rebooted.

Virtual or VPS servers generally are provided extensive support. This provides an added security should you need help. This support is generally provided at no additional charge to the client of most hosting providers.

As you are 'leasing' your 'virtual' or VPS system directly from the hosting providers own infrastructure or backbone these servers tend to be set behind their own firewalls, and are shielded away from curious hackers.

Virtualised platforms are ideally suited for trial and flexibility. You are able to try a variety of features without the need to sign up to long-term contracts and commitment, and are able to sometimes customize or vary your plan to make arrangements for bandwidth, memory, hard disk or even database access that matches your business needs.

Virtual hosting is excellent value for medium, smaller companies or even start ups that are on tighter budgets, or that are just trying to minimise their capital commitments and refrain from having to make any significant equipment purchase.

You are able to vary the amount of resources such as memory or hardisk space with minimal disruption to your hosted sites assuming that it is using a software based virtualization platform.

Disadvantages of VPS Hosting:

You are sharing the servers services with other people, and therefore your customers could be competing for resources and your site may have slower server response times during peak periods.

Page-memory issue on Windows 32 Bit servers using Virtuozzo as the
virtualization platform.

There are many advantages and disadvantages to virtual hosting. When looking to choose between different hosting providers you must way the definitive cost advantages in sharing a server provided by Virtual platforms with some of the disadvantages that come with such a solution.

------

Regards,
Sam

If you compare a shared hosting plan with a VPS, you will find that a VPS offers better features and functionality in comparison to a shared hosting plan.

A VPS is a Virtual Private Server which offers the functionality of a dedicated server as it uses it's own disk space, bandwidth, RAM and IP address same as the dedicated server. A VPS can be rebooted independently and it also allows you to run your own applications on it due to which you can consider it as a small dedicated server of your own

It all depends what you need. If you need complete control then you need to have root access and you will need a VPS. If you only need control for your website then go for shared account.

There are times when you need to install custom applications on the server which cannot be provided in a shared environment.

I understand that VPS hosting is generally more expensive than shared hosting, so I'm trying to decide whether the additional features are worth it. I'm in the process of building a website that may have somewhat politically-controversial content, so security is a big one for me.

The additional features with the VPS hosting plans are definitely worth it and as per your requirements, I would recommend you to choose a smaller VPS hosting plan for now and choose a higher configuration VPS plan if you need more disk space, bandwidth and RAM in future

Thumbs up VPS Hosting vs. Shared Hosting

Virtual Private Server technology (VPS) is essentially multiple isolated server environments on a single physical server. It uses its own disk space, RAM, CPU, IP addresses. A VPS account gives root access to the system, allowing for modifications of server configuration files and installation of applications.
Shared hosting (virtual hosting) is when you have multiple users residing on one server which share its resources and have the same operating system. Though you are sharing an environment each account does have its own “residence” which cannot be accessed by other users.
