VPS/VPN Question

Some of the people I know who visit a great deal of forums and other social type sites have went and bought VPN connections (from what they are calling them). Apparently someone told them these were excellent to connect to and prevent people from tracking them around the forums and such. Do ya'll recommend that type of thing or is there a better way (obviously proxies are worthless)?
