Question What is the difference between Windows VPS and Linux VPS?

Can anyone explain what is the difference between Windows VPS Hosting and Linux VPS hosting? What are Advantages and Disadvantages of Both? Which is more secured and of course the important one 'the price factor'?

Hi Christopher,

With respect to your question I have tried to explain you the difference between Windows VPS and Linux VPS

Ans. Windows VPS Hosting is a VPS Server with Windows OS in it whereas a Linux VPS Hosting is a VPS Server provided with Linux Operating System on it.

Ans. If you are looking forward to host MS SQL Server with .ASP or ASP.NET files then you should consider Windows VPS and if you are looking to have MySQL along with PHP, then Linux VPS is better choice for it.

Ans. You need to find out the security measure with your Hosting Provider and know the kind of security measures they follow to protect their servers.

Obviously Linux VPS is cheaper than Windows VPS as Linux OS is available for free and Windows OS requires licensing fee.

One of the pros of a windows OS is familiarity-and if you have never worked with Linux before then you may wish to consider this. Though the Linux systems will have a graphical user interface, it will still be a little different.

Windows VPS plans are more prone to sql attacks and script kiddies while Linux are more secured than Windows. Also open source apps are more secure in Linux environments.

I don't agree. Windows servers is equivalent to linux web servers in terms with security of servers. All servers that have Windows Server 2003 installed should upgrade to the latest Windows Server 2008 OS which has better functionality.

For windows dedicated servers, they should look into hardware firewall as well.

Both vps will be having different os. windows is the worlds most popular os and windows based web server is more user friendly and linux based server are comparatively more stable and windows based vps will be costlier than linux based vps because for windows you have to pay licensing fee.

Well, even if Windows is most popular OS in the world, I think that Linux is always preferred when it comes to host sites. I agree that the OS on your PC could be Windows, however, when you have to host your website without any Microsoft Application, you would prefer to go with Linux, won't you?

If you really care for the price Factor, Linux VPS is the one you are looking for

If you compare the Linux VPS and Windows VPS, you will have to add extra security for the windows as it is prone to attacks, this would increase the cost of the Hosting.

Thats correct, you need to purchase some add-ons for windows server to provider further security. Whereas with a Linux server, you by default get much better security and stability without having to pay anything extra.

When talking about stability and security of Linux VPS, CentOS and Ubuntu Server Editions are supposed to be much more secure than any other Linux distros on the server.

The difference between the two is that Windows VPS is a server that has a Windows Operating System in it while the Linux VPS is a server that has a Linux Operating System. The advantage of Windows VPS is that it has familiar features that a user can easily adapt and control. A user can also run higher-traffic websites, download or customize their applications that shared hosting cannot provide. The disadvantage is that price wise it is costly because of license fees.

Linux VPS' advantage is that it is an open source that a user can obtain its software for free but the disadvantage is that the user interface is hard to familiarize and control for a first time user.

I'm not sure that this is correct. Windows may be the most popular in the western world, but what about places like India where resources are not so high? Linux distros are free or a fraction of the cost-and this would make computing technology more accessible to people in these areas.

It is better to choose an operating system based on the facts of your requirements than to choose an operating system based on the popularity of it

In terms of recommendation, I would recommend you to choose Windows only if you need to run some of the applications developed by Microsoft. If you do not need any application developed by Microsoft, Linux is the best option
