Default Is VPS the way to go?

I have been reading up and it seems in the past 6 months more and more places are pushing for VPS, but is is easier than a physical server? I see many key reasons why it would be (access to start with) but are there any con's to it?

That's a fact!

The basic reason is that you will be able to save more on a VPS when compared to a dedicated server. Although, you might have a lot of restrictions on a VPS when compared to dedicated servers. Yet, it might be a good option over a shared or a reseller hosting package. ;)

Certainly! VPS hosting is often considered a step up from shared hosting. When it's time start supporting heavy traffic and custom applications, VPS hosting is highly recommended.

The best part of the VPS is the fact that the resources assigned to your VPS will be used by your websites only and you will be able to install custom applications on the server if required

As VPS acts exactly like a Dedicated server you can't utilize the whole resources assigned to your VPS because some resources are used to run OS, control panel, SQL.

Yeah, many webmaster use VPSs ( affordable option ) for testing their applications and their performance. As you have root/RDP access to your virtual server you can play with it the way you want !!!

However, you can surely consider a VPS as a better option in comparison to a shared or reseller hosting package as dedicated servers on which shared and reseller hosting packages are setup also use resources for OS, control panel, SQL databases etc. and resources left are then divided into many users and websites which definitely affects the performance of the websites :o

Though, it also depends on the number of accounts setup on the dedicated server on which shared and reseller hosting packages are created ;)

I am not at the point of custom applications but the traffic would be helpful. Also thinking about it, then what about more of a reseller VPS, is that a possibility as well?

I'm not sure what you mean by "reseller VPS"

If you mean you want to resell like web hosting on your VPS: yes you can do that.

If you mean you want to resell actuall VPS's then you would need to get a dedicated server and put like OpenVZ on it.

Yes, you can surely resell hosting services with the VPS

If you would like to resell hosting services with the VPS, we would suggest you to consider a control panel with the VPS as you will be able to create, manage and monitor the hosting accounts on your VPS through the control panel

When it comes to choosing the control panel, if you would like to have a Linux VPS, we would suggest you to choose cPanel/WHM control panel as cPanel/WHM control panel is more compatible with Linux VPS's.

If you are choosing a Windows VPS, you can consider Plesk control panel

Virtuozzo Power Panel is certainly a better option in comparison to OpenVZ as it includes many features.

Difference between Virtuozzo Power Panel and OpenVZ.

What is Virtuozzo ?

Virtuozzo Power Panel also known as VZPP is used to manage a VPS efficiently. A user can Restart, Stop, Start, and Fast Stop his VPS when an emergency occurs.
Using Virtuozzo also helps a user to get better information of his VPS such as Change password, File Manager, Resources, System Services, System Processes, Firewall, SSH Connection, Status Changes, QoS Alerts, Action Log, Traffic Log etc.

What is OpenVZ ?

OpenVZ is basically a testing version of Virtuozzo that swsoft release to the public. It doesn't have as many features (such as advanced resource management) and doesn't have the Power Panel (which allows you to backup, restore, repair, reinstall, reboot). SW-Soft doesn’t provide support for it so if we get an advanced problem.

Hope this helps

Yes, many webmaster follow this technique, they rent a dedicated server and using VZPP they create small VPS's and sell them to their clients this way even you can start with your VPS hosting business..

If you would like to create VPS's on a dedicated server and resell those VPS's to your customers, it is suggested that you consider VZMC (Virtuozzo Management Console) or VZCC (Virtuozzo Control Center) which will allow you to manage your dedicated server and the VPS's installed on the dedicated server very well

Hope this helps...

True enough. However, it is more in relation to the VPS's created on the server rather than management of the dedicated server.

If you consider VZMC or VZCC, you will be able to create VPS's, check the resource usage, allocated resources etc. of the VPS's on the dedicated server which is certainly helpful and hence it is recommended that you consider VZMC or VZCC with the dedicated server on which you wish to create VPS's
