Default Building a site question

If I use VPS with a cPanel, how do you build the site? Is there a place in cPanel or do I use FTP access? I'm still a bit confused on this part of it.

Do you mean actually building the site, or just uploading it?

I definitely prefer using FTP access (my preference is SmartFTP, but there are several free programs that work just as well) to using any sort of file manager built into a control panel. It's faster, easier, and a lot more organized.

I have had one website so far which is not active now, but I used a free FTP called FileZilla Client. Since I was brand new to that kind of thing it took a while to figure it out but it wasn't hard.

My friend who will try to help me work on this says she uses Filezilla so I am hoping that is how this is done otherwise maybe it will be more difficult for her? Again, another them I'm not familiar with.

Oops! Sorry I wasn't very clear on that. I did actually mean uploading it. I've done a few test type sites and I used Filezilla to upload it since it was free. what is the difference between Filezilla and SmartFTP?

I am not sure what the difference is, I think they work in a similar manner. I know for sure that Filezilla is free, I can't say for certain about SmartFTP.

I've never used anything but SmartFTP, but all FTP perform essentially the same tasks. It's just a matter of getting used to the organization. If you're starting out, you should do just fine with a free one like Filezilla. SmartFTP is no longer free to use.

Personal preference I would assume?

SmartFTP one as some point (long ago) free, not too sure now though. I use Filezilla since a friend turned me onto it a couple of years ago. It took sometime getting used to the slight differences but I am okay with it now and when I am not, I know how to research.

Yep, I decided to just stick with what I was used to. In retrospect I think it might have been a better idea to learn the ropes with a free FTP (would have saved money and given me a little more experience with the different programs available), but I ultimately did what was convenient.

So pretty much I will just use any FTP option I choose and it will all work the same. Which FTP do you all recommend in terms of a free FTP as I do not wish to pay for something I could get free. Is there one that is less complex than the other?

I've heard many people (including reviewers) sing praises for Filezilla, and it's probably the most popular free FTP program. I've also heard of FireFTP, which is apparently a Firefox add-on, but I've never used it myself (the idea of having a browser add-on to handle all the file management strikes me as a big plus, though).

I've tinkered with Filezilla and it was actually pretty straight forward and easy to navigate although it can be confusing if you don't know exactly what you are attempting to do. I need to check into the FF add-on. I love my FF, well if they would fix whatever the broke it would be even better!

FileZilla is very easy to use and it will be enough for any beginner to use it. You could pay for some fancy FTP software but I don't see why when this one is fully adequate.

Yeah, it was good while SmartFTP was free. It is a nice piece of FTP software. But as Quilceda said, you are good to go with any of the options. This type of software is very similar throughout the competition.

I never use hosting provider's built in CP FTP options. I always use my own way of FTP transfer. I combine different FTP clients, but mostly Total Commander program.

You can use FireFTP extension for Firefox browser for doing FTP transfer. That way when you're in the control panel you don't have to leave your browser, everything is done through the same interface.
