Default Email Limit

Quote:
9. BODHost limits the number of outgoing emails which can be sent to 500 emails per hour for our starter and medium range plans. On a corporate VPS, customers may send upto 750 emails per hour. http://www.bodhost.com/vps-guidelines.shtml
Is this a strict limit, like actually enforced? If so, what happens to emails over that limit.

I don't expect to ever even come close to that, but I'm just wondering.

The limit is set to avoid any sort of email spamming from our servers. If you send over this amount in any hour, most of the emails will bounce back with an undeliverable error.

I hope that helps.

So if one were to need to send over that amount, you could space them into hours or even consider subscribing to a newsletter type thing? I'm not sure, Amelia, what would you recommend?

Right, we recommend our clients to carve the mailing lists in smaller lots and then send it over.

Generally a huge mailing will cause the server load to go very high and the entire server will be sluggish until this process is completed.

Would Bodhost be open to extending this limit even on a case by case basis because there are internet marketers who mail to their list of thousands at a time?

You can have the email limit modified on a dedicated server. However, we do not recommend doing this. This only leads to blacklisting the server IP. Although we understand your mailing list might be a legit one.

Bulk emailing is basically used for keeping in touch with your clients, sending newsletters, announcing special offers and more.

We highly recommend:

* Create an opt-in email list.
* If you send bulk email to your list then make it easy for the members to unsubscribe.

I would say, that if a person was sending out emails in mass amounts of thousands, then that person should invest in an email marketing service such as MadMiMi or iContact or ConstantContact to prevent any issues of being accused of spamming.
