Default Switching from shared hosting to VPS

Hey hey, you guys! Jenny here, and I'll have you know that about my only previous experience with web hosting is the regular kind. You know, shared hosting? I'm kinda used to having the host handle things for me on technical matters so I'll only have to worry about my site, so I was told I'd want to get a managed vps if I were to switch over. Even so, I found I'd had to learn some new things anyway (I still get bewildered by Virtuozzo Power Panel sometimes).

How 'bout you? Any of you find it easy or difficult to make the switch?

Hi Jenny,

When I switched from shared to dedicated, I wanted to Hammering myself. I was so lost. But, the one thing I can say for sure is, Bodhost support ROCKS. If you use them for your hosting needs, I think you will be ok.

I, indeed believe that if you have a managed vps server, you won't have a problem in switching over. Are you an existing customer of BODHost ?

If yes, let me know. I'll make sure everything just runs smooth for you.

Regards,

Shane Phillips

I see you guys do 24x7 support is that telephone? My current company (virtualservers) offer this - and I have to say are excellant when it comes to both resillence and support.

I know what you mean about leaving shared hosting for "dedicated" or virtuals hosting though, it can be scary, but once you have learned the ropes it gets an awful lot easier!

This type of support alone makes me want to move my site to Bodhost right now. This is something I've been thinking about anyway and just may well do so over the next month. I just hate moving, it always means downtime.

It's always a good idea to learn something about managing your own server or vps, even with a host that provides excellent managed services (thumbs up to BODhost, btw!). Sort of like having a chauffeur drive you around town — there's no reason not to learn how to drive yourself, even if you won't be as good as a professional driver. I mean, if you own a car, you should at least know how to use it.

It's the same with a server. You probably won't need to know the really technical stuff, like server hardening, kernel and OS updates, etc. — that's why we have BODhost manage things for us — but knowing at least some of the basics, like using Virtuozzo, being able to keep track of resources, etc., will make it just that much better for you in the long run.

That said, yeah, most people need a period of adjustment when they first switch to a dedicated or vps, especially when they have no technical background in the first place. The person who told you to get a managed vps, Jenny, was absolutely right — managed services give you the security of knowing that your server or vps will be functioning normally, so you will be able to learn at your own pace and won't overwhelm yourself trying to learn new things. Actually, I've seen that happen all too often, people diving straight into unmanaged servers with absolutely no knowledge whatsoever. It was a disaster. XD

Thanks for the welcome, Amelia. And thanks to Shane, too, for the offer. Everything's actually smooth and hunky-dory, but like surreality says, I just wanted to know how my VPS works. After all, when you have a shiny VPS to play with, you have to know how to use it, eh?

Your Welcome, Jenny

Definitely, you should know how to play around with your VPS. Of course, anytime guidance from your provider is also important. ;)

Shane Phillips

I think when you are upgrading your hosting, the smoothness of the transition will depend on your host. If you are with a company like Bodhost, than no problem. However, there are some hosting companies out here that really stink at what they do. So, unless Bodhost is hosting your site, I'd double check everything before I do the upgrade.
