Default Has anyone started with a VPS?

From my own personal experience and from posting on several forums I've noticed that most users start off with shared hosting and then eventually switch over to VPS hosting when needed.

I never really heard of anyone starting out with a VPS, so out of curiosity, did anyone here first start hosting their site via a VPS or did you first start out with shared hosting?

TO start with shared hosting package or VPS depends on the requirements.

Hello ,

You can start your hosting account with shared hosting package as well as VPS it's depend on your requirements. If you are just looking to host simple website without any special requirements then you can start with Shared hosting package and you can upgrade your shared hosting package to VPS at any point of time.If your website need some applications which will need to run separate interface and ROOT access for installation then you must go with VPS hosting package because a Virtual Private Server (VPS) is a hosting environment that combines the benefits of both shared hosting and dedicated hosting. It does this by creating a virtual server that runs inside a hardware server via a specially designed partition.

Each Virtual Private Server partition runs its own operating system in a secure and private environment and cannot be accessed or interrupted by its neighbours.

This system gives you the same level of root access as a dedicated server whilst sharing the cost of the hardware. With a VPS you are virtually running your own server but at a fraction of the cost.

Yes, I had started with VPS hosting package. VPS Hosting do not have any restrictions like shared hosting.

If the resources that a VPS provides are not essential for a website, then why should anyone start with it and waste resources as well as money. Once the web site grows then as per requirements one can upgrade to higher plans due to necessity.

Yes, however sometimes it becomes difficult to know how much resources the website would need. In that case we ask the client to start off with a VPS and later upgrade to higher packages.

Indeed many clients who need Remote Access to the server or want to install any 3rd party applications start with VPS as it is not permitted on Shared or Reseller Hosting.

Suppose if I was to start with VPS and later I understand that I can even work with a shared plan then is it possible for me to downgrade to a shared plan from VPS?

Yes, it is possible to downgrade your VPS to a Shared hosting account. However, I would suggest you to confirm this with your web hosting provider which will not create any problems when you will be downgrading your VPS. Also, make sure that you ask about the upgrades as it is possible that you will have to upgrade your VPS later on.

So do you mean that if I downgrade to a shared hosting plan and later if I need to upgrade to VPS again then it is not possible? Or are there any conditions in this case? Is such downgrade-cum-upgrade allowed by BodHost?

Hi Peter,
It is definitely possible to upgrade to VPS again. There are no conditions applied in such case. Yes downgrade-cum-upgrade is allowed by BodHost

I was mainly just curious with this question as like I said before, most people seem to start with shared.

As for downgrading, assuming you can afford the VPS I'd recommend that you just stick with it and if you aren't really using too many of the resources then host another website in that same account to compensate.

A VPS is certainly a better option is comparison to a Shared account. However, you should consider it if you have those kind of requirements. It acts like a small Dedicated server and hence most people prefer it.

Well, it was a typing mistake and I am sorry for it. I have corrected the mistake now to avoid further confusion. By that I meant "VPS is always better than a Shared hosting account". I think I have cleared the confusion. Please let me know if you have any further questions.

Yes Carl, you have cleared the confusion.
Indeed, VPS is a better option. One gets independence to install almost any 3rd party application. It provides full SSH Access / RDP Access. And the more resources as well. If it is affordable to continue with VPS then one should not move to shared hosting in any case.

Correct. A VPS always offers better performance and stability than a Shared hosting account. Guaranteed resources, better uptime and SSH / RDP Access makes a VPS a better option ;)

Shared Hosting also provides guaranteed resources, better uptime however with VPS I can get better performance.

A question about SSH/RDP Access; what all can I do with this apart from accessing the VPS remotely?

There are many features of SSH / RDP Access. You get Strong connection security, ability to use own keyboard and mouse to control the remote PC, Remote Power Management with which you can reboot, shut down or log off the remote PC etc.

So indeed it covers many features under the remote connection.
