Choosing a VPS hosting platform basically depends on your requirements. If you have used ASP, FrontPage, ASP.NET environment, Windows Streaming Media, Access, MS SQL Server, or any of the other Microsoft’s owned technologies to develop your website then you should choose Windows platform. It also depends on the applications you will be running on your machine.

It will be possible to suggest you the hosting platform you should choose if you can give some more information about the applications you will be running on the server and the programming languages which will be used to develop your websites.

I think that many people would prefer Windows for the simple fact that they are more familiar with it, but really they are very similar and in most cases the os is transparent to the end user.

Windows is preferred by most of the users as they have used it on there local machine. You will have to pay the license fees for Windows and this makes it costlier than Linux. Also, Windows is mostly compatible with Microsoft technologies which is also a problem and you will not face this problem with Linux.

To add to Carl Owen's words, there is a big misconception, that one needs to have the same OS on the server as that which is present on the local machine. This is absolutely untrue. Inorder to have a cheaper hosting experience one can opt for Linux OS on the server despite the fact that the local machine has Windows Operating System installed.

Matt

I would choose Linux VPS over Windows VPS for two reasons. First reason is based on price factor, Linux VPS is much cheaper than Windows VPS. We already know that Linux is a free open source software and you won't need to pay any charges like the licensing fee. If I have to choose Windows VPS, I will have to pay the licensing fee because Windows is a part of Microsoft. Second reason, there is less problem if Linux is installed in my server and I won't need to contact the help support for assistance.

Agreed. It is not necessary to have the same operating system installed on your local computer. You can have a completely different operating system on your local computer and your server. Infact, there is no connection between the operating system of your server and your computer.

IMO, you should go with Linux VPS as it is more cheaper and easier to operate with. Also, it depends on the applications you are going to run on it, you will be able to run all the applications on windows platform, but its gonna be expensive.

My opinion on this matter: Linux all the way. Not only is linux free, but pretty much anything you want to put on it is also free.

Linux also supports a whole lot more applications. I'd say the ratio of Linux to Windows open source apps (not counting cross-platform) is 20-1.

Even if you don't know linux very well, your control panel can easily cover that up.

People debate what I am about to say, but Linux is just better made for servers.

Keep in mind that Bodhost has a great support team. If you ever need help they will help you. They even help install applications if you need it.

I agree! Linux does everything that many users want it to, but some people have tasks that require Windows applications.
