Moving my domain

Hello all. I just bought a new VPS server here.

I have already a working site on my old hosting company and i have a couple of questions before try to move it here. So lets start.

1) My site "works" with a social community software. Because i want to make some changes to the software i prefer to setup it again to the new server make the changes i want and then transfer my users files, blogs,etc.

Is this possible? and if yes how. I understand that i have to setup the old domain to VPS but how i can do that without close the old?

2) IF the above works what i have to do when i will be ready to transfer?(I mean with the DNS things) Note that i dont want to leave anything to the old company.
