Default To Hire or To Study

What do you think is better, hiring someone to maintain my website or to study on how to maintain a website? As I am just a beginner in uploading a website that I made, I'm not entirely sure on what to do. I could study on my own but I have other priorities to do. Do you think hiring someone to maintain my website is a good idea?

If you are considering to hire someone to do the job, hire me LOL. If you have made your own website, the uploading, maintenance and webhosting related things are much easier. It is not so complicated as designing and developing the website itself. You can even ask for help to the customer support of web hosting company you are using.

Well, can you give me your resume?

Just kidding, I'm still finishing up my website. I think you are right about asking the web hosting company for directions on how to upload and maintain the website. I will remember that.

Otherwise you can learn yourself from free tutorials available on the net. Most Wordpress tutorial usually includes a guide to uploading files using FTP, creating databases, linking user names with the databases etc.

I agree that learning about it on your own is the best way to do it. That gives you greater control and ability to tweak things as needed. Definitely do it yourself, if you have the time and interest.

Outsourcing is always the easy way out. That is until you want something done and do not know how to explain to the person who is maintaining the site for you. I decided to learn as I go to avoid issues like that.

I would say at least learn the basics now of how to maintain your site. This way, if you choose to outsource at a later date, you atleast know how to pick up the pieces if the person(s) you hire do not workout.

It all depends on what sort of site your hosting, the level of customer interaction with your site that will require support etc.

If its a basic site, learn yourself. It will pay you back many times in the future for the small amount of time invested.

My 5 cents. (We dont have 1 or 2 cents in Australia) :-)

Yes, it's really rewarding to learn to deal with the hosting server things. I ever got $5 to upload files to a hosting server. Not bad for a job which takes less than 15 minutes.

As it's not so complicated as many people think, you won't need to invest too much time to learn it. Trust me.

I would guess that depends on what you know and if you really want to put any time into learning. Most never do and would rather hire someone, but I have seen a couple of people learn on their own and actually then appreciate what the "geeks" in the world do.

Maintaining a website is easier than creating a website. So if I'm getting the gist of this topic correctly then I have to say that learning how to manage the website is the way to go. And it is much more fun to tweak your own website than telling someone what you like to do on your website.

That's true. Sometimes you don't even know what you want, and you will get some good ideas while you are working on your website. It wouldn't happen if you just hire some pros to do the job.

If you hire someone to maintain your website, he can always access the background of your site (control panel host/administrator account, etc.). Make sure you hire someone who is trustworthy and knows the codes. Learning the basics by yourself can help you save money in the future, there are a lot of good tutorials to rely on how to maintain your site.

Thanks for the support guys! I'm now trying to learn how to maintain a website. It is easier than creating the website itself. I thought that there are many complicated functions to maintain a website. It just takes a little reading and many visits to dictionary to understand clearly about the terms used in tutorials.

You know, I would make the choice based upon whether the site was intended to make money for me or not. If I wanted to make money, then I'd get it done properly-otherwise I'd take the time to learn.

I would also make it depending on what you want the site to do. Are you going to have something so complicated you need to drop your job and full time study in order to learn how to take care of it.

Yes, that's another good point. A particularly complicated set up-well it would just be too much to learn. My partner makes PHP e-commerce systems for a living, and it took years to learn-that would be no good if you need a system online fast.

According to me, if you are not in a haste then you should learn it yourself as it will increase your skills and next time if you need it then you won't be dependant on others to get your job done however if you feel that you need it asap then you should get it done through someone else and learn it as per your convenience.

Regards
Damien.

Skills are good but not when they come at the expense of your business, if you are losing out money through either having a badly designed site or having a e delay in setting up.

Great points have been given here. I will learn how to manage my website but I won't sacrifice my time for work and rest. I will study it step by step because I'm not really in a hurry.

I think the internet has given us the opportunity to work in the comforts of our homes. This is why I want to learn more about it and I might even work full time in the internet when I am really good at developing and monetizing a website.
