What are ...?
I am really a newbie in this virtual world and I know next to nothing about how things work here. Since I came into this forum, I have learned some things more than what I learned about blogging. My blog is in wordpress and I haven't updated it in ages. May I ask the gurus here about some things that I have probably mixed up in my mind...
1. What are the differences between a host, a domain and a website? I have a website in wordpress. which is the domain and the host and what does each one do for my website?
2. My website has the usual features of having the three colums that contain the blog entries, the blogroll, archives, etc. What do the domain and the host have?
3. My website has its url as the identity, how do you identifythe domain and the host?
Is this something like, my house is the website, located in the domain state and in the host country? or did I get it muddled up?

Hello,
I don't think that should be much of confusion. However, i have answered your questions as follows :
1) What are the differences between a host, a domain and a website? I have a website in wordpress. which is the domain and the host and what does each one do for my website?
Ans. Hosts basically provide you with space on a server at a Data Center which are owned by them and at the same point of time, providing 24x7 Internet connectivity.Domains are basically identification determined based on Domain Name System. They are used for addressing purposes and finally, websites refers to collection of web pages, images, videos that are addressed with domain name or their IP address.
2. My website has the usual features of having the three colums that contain the blog entries, the blogroll, archives, etc. What do the domain and the host have?
Ans. Development of your website is completely under your control. Domain will basically identify your website on the internet and Web host will provide you with space to host on their server.
3. My website has its url as the identity, how do you identify the domain and the host?
Ans. URL and Domain are in close relation or you may call it more or less the same in layman terms and host is in relation to providing space to host your website files and databases.
Regards,
Shane Phillips

If that is the case, then, in http://mywebpage.wordpress dot com, mywebpage is the website, wordpress.com is the domain. who is the host and where is it?
If I get my own dedicated server, would my url change?

Well, here the domain is wordpress.com; subdomain is mywebpage.wordpress.com
You can simply access it as mywebpage.com
If you try accessing it as http: // www . mywebpage.wordpress.com then it will redirect you to Wordpress website and not your website.
Your question:- who is the host and where is it?
You cannot locate your host on the blog by default. However, if you want it to be mentioned on the blog then you can change the permissions for Footer in WP-Admin area and update the script.
If you are unable to locate this or make necessary changes then you can contact the local web developer and he/she can help you with running the Wordpress blog.
If I get my own dedicated server, would my url change?
It is not an easy task to own self Data center. However, if you owned one, there will not be any change in your url

The above answers your questions nicely but I want to add to the point about the dedicated server. If you get your own dedicated server, the URL could be different depending on how you got the dedicated server. If you want the URL to be something that you want, you must buy a domain name and then connect it with your website. I haven't used wordpress so I'm not sure how it would work but it should be possible if you contact them.

Then, if I want my website hosted by bodhost, I can still use the url: http://www.mywebpage.wordpress.com? Then, I can do what I want in my webpage and I can say what I want to say within the legal bounds and without the additional restrictions from anybody else?

No, you cannot use the URL http://www.mywebpage.wordpress.com? if you wish to have your own website If you use this kind of URL, someone who enters this URL in the browser will see your blog which is on the wordpress site i.e. wordpress dot com
If you wish to have your own website then you will have to register your own unique domain name. If you have your own domain name, for example, tigress dot com then you can surely consider our Dedicated server or any other hosting packages we offer to host this domain name
As you will have administrator access to your website, you can surely create content on your website according to you, however, when it comes to content, there are some restrictions
If you keep content on your website which is already copyrighted by some other website then this can create problems for you :o Also, illegal adult content is not allowed and you should make sure that you do not have illegal adult content on your website.
Please feel free to post if you have more questions
