Thats nice thinking Gelato for switching to a self hosted server. But,I am not sure much would moving the content from the free blog hosting provider help you.The content might have already been indexed in the search engines under the URL of the free blogging provider, now if you move the identical content to your self owned domain, search engines would consider it as duplicate content.May be you can try and delete the content from the previous location and submit your own domain to search engines, though not sure how much would that help, but you can surely give it a try. There are chances that the next time google crawls, the content won't be available on the old location and show no results in the SERP, but when it indexes your website the content should be available.
What I would recommend you is wait for search engines to crawl the free hosting website, once it updates itself with no content there, then you can add the same data to your website.

Thumbs up

As far as I know, free blog hosting providers won't allow you to move your content to the paid hosting provider and host your own Wordpress blog. However, you can contact them and ask if was possible for you do this. If they agree, you can migrate the content on your Wordpress blog, otherwise, you can create a new Wordpress blog and write new content on it.

All the best.
