PhP pages layouts (templates)

Hi all,

My host has a large range of PHP content editors, I've just tried out a couple (Mambo, PHP-nuke), and it's obvious that PHP is far more complicated then I thought. I thought these content managers would include layout as well, but clearly not.

How do I set about creating my own templates, so I can layout my pages as I want? I'm a total novice in this area, and the support areas of these packages are no help
