Default WordPress MU

I have a basic question. Has any of you used WordPress MU? Is it hard to manage it, how does it work. Can I install MU after I have installed my sites? I already have some WP sites, so this would be very important.

I also have many WordPress sites. This would be a great thing to do, have once interface to control all of your installations. I hate it when I have to upgrade or install plugins to all of my blogs separately.

Did someone had experience with this software? Is it hard to install it, is it hard to manage it? Can you connect the blogs after you had them installed independently?

My friend is using it and he says that it's pretty easy to manage. He said, if you know your way around WordPress, you'll known you way around MU too.
