Default PHP alternatives

There's no doubt PHP will continue to be the king of server side programming, but what about the alternatives to PHP that are out there? How well do you think they stack up, and which do you think has the best chance of knocking PHP of its perch?

I have heard good things about Ruby on Rails. Lots of companies here are looking for RoR developers, so it seems like it's the next big thing. Despite all the hype, I haven't really seen many Rails-powered sites out there. Maybe I'm just not looking hard enough.
