I want to revive this thread because its very informative.

In my own opinion, PHP will stay because of its simplicity. Even though Java is gaining popularity, PHP is still very much in use by many people and I don't think it will slow down.

Just like what others have said, its really a personal preference whether you use PHP or other programs.

This is really kind of a pointless discussion. Server Side Javascript hasn't even begun to replace PHP for dynamic sites.

Almost all web applications are also written in PHP and would have no reason to switch. PHP is also included with almost every Linux distro under which most websites run.

If anything, PHP is gaining.

I think you are absolutely both right. PHP is too user-friendly and directly integrated to just disappear.

To flip the question-- anyone think Java will end up dying out?

I still see some people think that PHP is as easy as making toast, which it might not be extremely hard but sometimes you know people come up with some crazy things they want their sites to do and poof then its a hard project.

Java, maybe one day but I doubt it will happen anytime soon.
