Default PostgreSQL?

I have never heard of PostgreSQL before. I know that both PostgreSQL and MySQL are free to use but what is the difference between them? What are the in and outs of PostgreSQL to make my system running smoothly? Are both database configurations non-identical?

MySQL is believed to be faster than PostgreSQL, but developers seem to prefer PostgreSQL when it comes to variety of features, since MySQL is seen as basic. Persons who use Oracle also tend to prefer PostgreSQL.

Both have an astonishing range of features that increase data integrity, functionality, and performance. However MySQL is slightly popular between different open source web development packages. And PostgreSQL has more popular in experienced developers Community, specially those who willing to work with Oracle and SQLServer experience.
