I'm not sure if what you heard is true, but having dedicated IP for a site is useful because you get your own unique address that is not shared with any other web resource/site.

It often happens when you use shared IP that some of the sites that you share you IP with get blacklisted by Google and other search engines. In that case your site goes on the blacklist as well because you share the same IP. Owning a dedicated IP washes your hands of anyone's filth.

This is true. Having dedicated IP costs more and is paid per each site that you want to have it on. But it does provide some credibility.
They are not that much expensive and if it is true what you are saying than it is definitely important to have one in order to gain credibility with Google.
