Default VPS to Dedicated

Is there any major difference besides the extras one would have to use/do/etc if you are on a linux vps or a linux dedicated server? This of course would depend if you were managing it on your own but I figured maybe ask just to make sure.

I don't fully understand your question.

However, there is really no difference between a VPS and a dedicated server. At least not from the standpoint of using it, configuring it, and administrating it.

If that doesn't answer your question, please try to re-ask it more clearly so I can understand it.

Are you referring to an upgrade from VPS to Dedicated Server ?

That is what it reads as. I know some people have played around with dedicated ones and ended up liking the idea of a VPS better so going the other way, I am not sure would be a good choice.

From what I learned here, upgrading your server from VPS to dedicated all depends on your traffic and needed resources. If your website is slowing down already because of traffic then you might need faster applications or bigger data space for storage. Then that might be the time to upgrade from VPS to Dedicated.

It is also a wise idea to consult your web hosting company if you need to upgrade. Sometimes there are just some problems that needs to be solve and upgrading is not the solution.

If you want to compare between VPS and Dedicated, here is the physical evidence: (click the links to see the comparison)

Virtual Private Server (Fully Managed Virtual Private Servers Starting at $24.99USD p/m Only at BODHost.com)

Dedicated Servers (Fully Managed Dedicated Servers - 100% Guaranteed Uptime only at BODHost)

Unfortunately there are many companies that won't notify you when it's the time to upgrade. Instead they will just send you the notice that you are doing something wrong. For a beginner this can be very confusing.

I agree! I had a hosting with one company that used to send me threats whenever I tried to upload a file that is bigger than 500MB, although my package stated unlimited space and bandwidth. Go figure...

Out of curiosity, what is that company? This is very strange. Decent thing would be to contact you and at least tell you the truth. Such marketing tricks are just horrible lies!

From what I learned here, unlimited space and bandwidth is unrealistic. Its just an advertising method to attract new website owners into getting their hosting packages. And by the way, come to think of it, if they offer you unlimited resources, you also should pay them unlimited amount of money.

Well, I'm on a shared server and slowly but surely I'm topping my so called unlimited disk/bandwidth package. I'm thinking about going VPS all the way, I don't think dedicated server is the solution for me yet.

Yes, from most of the advices I learned from this forum, VPS is the next move coming from share hosting. It's not practical spending so much money on dedicated wherein you could still run your website well on VPS, which is much cheaper.
