Default linux hosting

Can I build a Linux dedicated server and host a website on it from my place? Do I need plenty of bandwidth to host the Linux server? Is it okay to run it with a standard DSL or cable?

I am not sure what do you mean by building a server here. However you can definitely lease a Linux Dedicated Server from BodHost. You can check different plans for Dedicated Servers here.
Bandwidth usage depends on what actually you want to host on the server. If you can let us know what actually you want to host on the server then we will be able to give you proper suggestion.
DSL or a cable is used for your local internet connection. Yes, you can host Linux Dedicated Server even if you are using DSL or cable.

Well, it is definitely possible to make your own Linux Dedicated server at your home and host a website on it. However, you should make sure that this won't be a Reliable solution at all and Most of the people in the Hosting industry do not recommend this. Also, if your website is a Mission Critical i.e. an Important website then you shouldn't even think of hosting it at your Home.

Bandwidth will be required according to the requirements of the website but the connectivity and the Speed of the connection will play an important Role. A DSL or Cable won't be sufficient for a Reliable connection and use of such things should be avoided for hosting a website. It is always better to lease a Dedicated server from a web hosting provider for Reliability, Good Connectivity, better performance etc.

Depends on the amount of traffic. You can easily run an http server out of your own house but the problem is that most internet providers cap the upload speed, not the download speed. This means that users connecting to your server won't experience even close to the speeds you usually browse the internet.

I would not recommend this personally, shared hosting is very cheap.
