Default Linux server on Windows laptop?

Guys, I have a Sony Vaio FJ laptop, with Pentium M 740 1.73GHz 2MB Cache, 512 MB DDR2 RAM and it is equipped with 100GB SATA Hard Drive 5400 RPM. It runs on Microsoft Windows XP Home. The question is, can I run a Linux server on my Windows laptop? Do I need to ditch Windows OS and run my laptop as a server?

Most importantly, do you have an exclusive/static IP for internet connectivity ? Yep, you'd need to remove the currently installed Windows OS & install a fresh copy of Linux if you want the laptop to be used as a server.. If you want Windows as well.. create some space/partition for Linux & get the free OS installed as per your choice You won't be able to run both of them simultaneously, unless you install Sun xVM Virtual Box on Windows [Mother] & install Linux on the VM [Child]. Good luck..

You can definitely install Linux on it but as Rocky pointed out you'll have to decide what you want to do, you'll either have to get rid of Windows, install both and dual boot, or you could run Linux inside of Windows using that software he mentioned. However, I wouldn't recommend that Virtual Box method as it could be overwhelming if you're not familiar with it and it's definitely not a good idea if you want to create a server that will be running 24-7.
