Default hosting at home with Linux

Can I build a Linux dedicated server and host a website on it from my place? Do I need plenty of bandwidth to host the Linux server? Is it okay to run it with a standard DSL or cable?

Hello,

Yes, that's possible. Now this basically means you are looking to host a local server or a web server which will have all your website contents. For a start, you don't need much bandwidth to host on a linux dedicated server. Basic Broadband or leased line is fine if you need to host a local server on the internet.

Now, here is what you do, opt for a linux dedicated web server which will not only allow you to host your website 24x7 but will also reduce the headache of managing your own linux server.

Let me know if that helps!

Regards,

Shane Phillips

As Shane Phillips mentioned, it is indeed possible but one thing to keep in mind is that your cable/DSL company might not allow you to legally do that as a lot of them state that doing such a thing is against their terms of service due to bandwidth issues if I'm not mistaken.

Plus, if you're not familiar with securing such a server it might be a hassle to do it yourself. However, if it's just to test out some PHP scripts then you might not have a problem, but if you want to broadcast your site over the net you might want to get a dedicated solution.

Well, it is definitely possible to build a Linux Dedicated server and host your website on it but make sure that this is not a good idea as you will face a lot of problems with the same as the technical knowledge required will be too much and even if you are one of best technicians, your website and server won't be able to perform well simply because of the facilities which will not be available for the server which are available in the datacenter.

Thanks for replying back Shane. I was wondering if my ISP would allow me to operate the Linux server in my connection. I heard that most internet service providers require a business type access plan in Linux Server to host more traffic to my site. Do Linux Servers sometimes have ISP issues?

Well, if you are trying to host a Linux Dedicated server at home, you will definitely require Bandwidth and it is quite possible that you will have to go for a Business type connection for Bandwidth. However, make sure that you ask your Local ISP before you try to host the server at home as most of the ISP's don't allow this.
