Default developer tools
I was just wondering if anyone has had to ./configure && make && make install anything on their hosting packages, and if this is allowed - many hosts don't let you compile your own scripts or modules for apache, etc..

Well, if you are going to be using the vps or dedicated server services here, I think that you will have root access so you should be able to do pretty much anything.
