Even though the search engines try to closely guard the ways in which they evaluate and rank websites, there is an acceptance that IP addresses can impact on the final ranking of a site.

A shared IP address means that your website will be linked in with other sites during this process, which can have a negative impact for two reasons. If the quality of the other sites is very low, it is likely to drag down the rating applied to your site. Also, if you own a number of sites, it would be of benefit to place links to each other on your different sites.

Seems you are right, but this topic is very debatable since a long time. A lot of users prefer dedicated IP or class C IP for SEO benefits, but I've seen many websites on shared IP who are doing well in terms SEO work. In my opinion, domain popularity is more important than the IP ever was. Search engine engineers are far more aware about this issue than the SEO experts.

Choosing a Dedicated IP address over a shared IP is considered to be a benefit as it is said that if a site is hosted on a shared IP, other sites hosted on the same IP can affect the SEO of the site. Therefore, if some illegal or blacklisted sites are hosted on the same IP, the SEO of a clean site can be affected due to this reason. Also, a site with dedicated IP address is considered to be more secured.
