VoIP is stands for Voice over Internet Protocol. VoIP is simply the transmission of voice traffic over IP-based networks.
The IP was basically designed for data networking. The success of IP in becoming a world standard for data networking has led to its adaptation to voice networking.
VoIP phone service replaces your phone line with a high-speed Internet connection. It is that easy.
When conventional telephone service compresses your voice into a frequency on a wire, VoIP compresses the sound of your voice into packets of data. In milliseconds, these data packets are sent over the Internet. When the data reaches the final destination, it is converted back to sound. If utilize VoIP to call someone on the traditional phone network, the VoIP call is converted to sound once it reaches the network and the call is routed normally. The difference is that you have paid a lot less for that call.
There are so-many great features that make VoIP attractive. Such as : Call forwarding, call waiting, voicemail, caller ID and three-way calling are some of the many services included with Internet telephone at no extra charge. You can also send data such as pictures and documents at the same time you are talking on the phone.
Portability - Another advantage of VoIP is portability. You can create and receive phone calls maybe there is a broadband connection simply by signing in to your VoIP account.
Low cost - One of the main advantages of VoIP is the low cost. If you have a fast Internet connection (DSL or cable) you can make PC-to-PC phone calls anywhere in the world for free. If you wish to make a PC-to-phone connection, however, there's usually a charge for this but probably much cheaper than your regular phone service.
There are some disadvantages of VoIP. Those are as follows :
a. No service during a power outage
b. VoIP has a bit to improve on Voice Quality, but not in all cases.
c. The most prominent security issues over VoIP are identity and service theft, viruses and malware, denial of service, spamming, call tampering and phishing attacks.
