Hi

Is it a good idea to purchase a domain name from domain registrars rather than purchasing it from web hosting provider? :rolleyes:

All it depends on you, however, you do not have to buy the domain name and web hosting from the same supplier. In fact it is even strongly discouraged, since it allows you to easily switch hosting in case of failure or abuse of it.

Comparison should be done between only domain registrars or a company which is purely in the web hosting industry since the long time.

It is not at all necessary that you have to buy the domain name and web hosting from the same supplier.

It is well known that a registrar registers domains and a web hosting provider offers us hosting services. Now-a-days most of the web host provider provides domain registration facility also. In some case your domain registrar and your hosting provider can be one an the same or can also be entirely two different companies.

Only thing is that if we have hosting with one company and domain registration with another company, and if we come across any issues related to our domain or if our domain is not propagated or if our domain is not resolving properly then we need to contact both hosting provider and our domain registrar separately updating both with our issues and it gets tougher when we have to pass on the messages from one to another i.e from domain registrar to hosting provider or from hosting provider to domain registrar.

So it is always easy if our domain registrar and our hosting provider is one and the same. Because if we ever face any problem with our domain and if we contact our hosting provider for technical support then they can check and directly make the changes at the registrar end. There is no need to contact the registrar and wait for the update and then pass on the message to hosting provider which is really a confusion and a waste of time.

In case of your next issue regarding the points that you should consider while purchasing domain name is the availability of domain. Make sure to purchase or check the availability of the domain only when you are fully ready to purchase it, and you are completely ready with your payment options in your hand. And make sure that you do not disclose your domain to anyone. As even domain name can be stolen. And always remember to purchase it from trusted source.

It would be reluctant if you are to register domains and avail hosting services from different providers. If you are to face any issues with any of these services, then you’ve to depend on the providers separately. To have a better option, you may move in with a service provider like BODHost who avail both the domain registration and web hosting services altogether.

You will have to check what kind of hosting provider you are choosing to host your websites and register the domain. If you are choosing a well established hosting provider who has been around for a long time, you can register domains with it. However, the support will play a major factor in this case as the hosting provider should provide full support regarding the issues related to domains.

Accoriding to me, You can better stick to a single company that provides both domain registrar and web hosting as it can avoid any kind of redirection delays between your providers. Well, in such a case my personal recommendation would be to register a domain name with a domain name provider as if there is a mess with your hosting provider, you can still host your domain name at a different provider. If you are too much sure about the web hosting provider and want to stick with them for a long term or forever, the only you should opt for registering a domain name and hosting at one place.

Interesting thread. I think if you know the hosting company is reliable and the domain name is in your ownership then there is no problem keeping the domain with them.

Also, an important thing you should make sure is that while registering a domain name from either from a domain registrar or a web hosting provider, just make sure they offer at least 1 yr free whois privacy protection as most of the providers do offer free whois service for 1yr.
