Default Hard Drive comparison?

Hi

I have to use Linux web server to host MySQL database so I am looking for to analyze, how much performance can improve if I choose SSD (solid state drive) instead of regular SCSI drive.

This is totally depends on what type of SSD it is. Although, ask yourself an question that you really need SSD or not. If you are being confused by the hard drive term, then in my opinion a faster HDD will help and if you've a small amount of database that could well match into the RAM you might just have to do some optimizations.

If you have more than four GB RAM, then it is fine with a decently optimized MySQL database along with good written queries. If you don't have an iowait with a 15k RPM enterprise HDD, then you do not need to upgrade. You will get a large performance thrust, but it might be unthinkable to notice the performance with a small amount of database. IMO, SSD need to be considered if you have a large databases and lower amount of RAM.

I believe, a 15K enterprise hard drive is good enough for your requirement. The key element of the SSD drive is not for a speed as it's for reliability. If you opt SSD, I am sure it will live longer than your present drive.

My intent behind choosing SSD drive is for improving my database operations speed and nothing else.

Then you should stick with SCSI rather than SSD. The biggest concern issue with SSD is speed.

@KristineHabe

I could not agree with you, because Intel X25-E extreme SATA SSD drive will perform much better and faster than a regular HDD for a database usage form. You will never regret your decision later. If you are using faster regular hard drive, and your database is well matched with RAM, still there few chances that time tables will be locked. On the other hand SSD drive writes quite a faster than usual disk.
