which setup would be better?

Hello,

I will be running game servers with the new machines. which setup would be better?

Option #1
Dual 2.4ghz Xeon 533mhz FSB

Option #2
Opteron 240 1.4ghz 800mhz FSB 1mb Cache

Also the RAM must be ECC or can I use regular Kingston 512mb?

Please give me some comments or suggestions about it.

I'd go with Xeons+ECC RAM. The Xeons are a bit more time-tested, and IIRC they have much faster performance than the Opterons at this point. The main benefit to the Opterons is the ability to address more than 4GB RAM, but if you're just doing a gaming server, that's not really necessary.

Make sure your Xeons have HyperThreading and you'll be a happy camper.

I am going to second the motion for #1. Time tested reliability is always the better way to go when you are considering something like this. The ability of getting more than 4gb ram does not outweigh the speed and reliability.
