Default Migrating

Hi Bodhost people! Recently someone asked me a question about your services and I wanted to get the correct information before reporting back. They have a current hosting plan elsewhere but are looking to move to another. If they choose Bodhost can you migrate all their information from the current server to yours? Would this involve any loss of data? Many thanks guys.

Do you know what OS their website is currently on? Also, which control panel they are currently using? With similar control panels it becomes easy to migrate the data.

Thanks for the reply. It's not someone I have regular contact with but I will check it out and get back with the information. I assume there is a way to back up data in case of a trickier migration?

What happens to the data if the control panel is not the same? Is it not possible to migrate a website using Windows into a server which uses Linux?

In that case it becomes a manual migration. Downloading files/folders on your machine and then uploading them via FTP. With similar control panels it is easy to migrate the data.

Windows to linux or viceversa migration is really not easy. You loose a lot of data and anything that is not supported on one of the OS like a asp.net page works on windows.

Most of the control panels do come with a backup option, yes. However, a full restore is possible only with similar control panels. If using different control panels at both ends, you can directly FTP data on the server.

So to avoid data loss, I think we should migrate to the same control panel like the one we used in the first server.

Is there a way to minimize data if ever we are migrating into another server with different control panel?

you will need same control panel and same OS to do a full migration at both ends.

Yes,with same control panels you can select what data you need to migrate on new server. If not, then you can backup only the data you wish to move on new server.
