What is generally offered in the way of security against brute force attacks on a server? I understand the need to do some independent checking of server logs, but am interested in what else is necessary.

To add what Blade is inquiring, what are the signs that our website is being attacked? Are there any tell-tale signs when someone is forcefully trying to hack the servers? Or we will only know about it when the attack was made successfully?
