Default Traffic usage

What defines traffic usage?
What affects traffic usage?
Does reloading the same page add traffic usage?
If one person visited once a day, how much would that use?

I've never wondered about this before because I never made a public website but now that my friends are visiting it, I'm a little concerned about going over. What happens if I do reach the limit?

You are basically referring to the term Bandwidth. Bandwidth is often used as a synonym for Data transfer rate. When your website is requested by your visitor the Bandwidth of your web hosting package/server is used. If you have more number of visitors on your website, you will require more Bandwidth.

If your website is loaded again, it will definitely require Bandwidth. It is really very difficult to calculate the amount of Bandwidth used if a person visits your website once in a day. It depends on the size of your website and the time for which your visitor stays on the website.

It depends on the web hosting company which has provided the server to you as to what they do when the Bandwidth limit is crossed. You should confirm with the Web hosting company you are looking to purchase the server from as to what they do in case the Bandwidth limit is exceeded.

If you have your server with BODhost.com, you will receive a notification before you cross your Bandwidth limits. Then, you can upgrade your package to get more Bandwidth.

That's correct an email is sent to the users when they have reached 80% of their bandwidth. However, the bandwidth will be reset back to zero at the beginning of each month, just so you know.

So... how much bandwidth would a basic package allow me if I choose to have my hosting with Bodhost? If each page loads each graphic plus html code per visitor and my site has currently around 2,500 page views a day - that's not gonna be cheap, right?

The starter plan gives you 400GB bandwidth per month. You may want to take a look at the plan details here

Thanks for those links Amelia and Angela. That helps me a lot with understanding what I need and how much it's going to cost with my existing traffic and page-view numbers.

You can select a package according to your Disk space and Bandwidth requirements and you will be able to save more money if you pay for the package Annually. Hence, we suggest our customers to pay on yearly basis as we always look forward to offer Profitable deals to our customers. However, it is just an option.

Ok thanks for the info. Does staying on a webpage but not laoding anything use bandwidth? I seems that I dont need to worry about bandwith if I dont have lots of high quality pages.

If you have opened a webpage in a browser and you only browse the same page, then it won't require Bandwidth. However, if the page is refreshed, it will require Bandwidth but the Bandwidth required will be really less and you won't even notice it. Bandwidth required depends on the size of page which is loaded and hence if the page does not have a good size, it won't require much Bandwidth.

Try thinking of bandwidth like your internet at home. If you are browing through pages, it gets used up. If you stay on the same page that doesnt refresh, you don't use any more bandwidth. However, just being connected to the internet might use bandwidth when you don't notice. Its basicly the same idea except for you are hosting the page.

Ok thanks. I understand this a lot better now. Is it possible to just upgrade bandwidth and not the rest of the plan? Because if I ever use up all the bandwidth I don't want to spend extra money on stuff I dont really need.

Yes, it is definitely possible to get more bandwidth with a web hosting package. However, it is better if you ask your web hosting provider before you purchase a hosting package from them. When it comes to BODhost, it will is definitely possible to get more bandwidth with the package/server. However, we recommend an upgrade. You can contact us to know more about the charges for extra bandwidth

Live chat is the best option to negotiate and understand the exact package suitable for a web-site to be hosted. These guys can provide oneself with a most suitable web hosting plan.
I recommend that before hunting for a web hosting company, one should be aware of the website's requirements, such as the necessary bandwidth and the diskspace that would be essential to run a website successfully on the Internet. Once you access the chat you can present with all these details to the operator. This helps in deciding the exact plan suitable for you.
