Dedicated Servers for large websites?

I came to know that for large web sites dedicated servers are mandatory and every hosting service provider is advising us to shift to dedicated server. How does it will be helpful for the large web sites. Please let me know. I have also heard that heavy SQL require dedicated servers.

According to my point of view a dedicated server is an expensive proposition and it is suitable for the following:

1) Large companies with a strong capital base

2) Companies having a huge online presence

3) Companies having a large web site

4) Companies having a lot of traffic

5) Companies that engage in e-commerce through website etc.

6) Companies that have heavy SQL Databases

Hi,

I also have a really large site running on a primary domain with 10 sub-domains attached to it. It receives around 110,000 visitors a month. It's a content site/newsletter mostly, although I do have several e-books selling through an e-commerce platform on it.

Even though I live in Australia, my site is currently hosted in Canada because at the time they were the only ones I could find offering a dedicated server for it.

I really would appreciate further information please Shane. Along with the hosting capabilities, I also need access to a mailing list management software thingy (translated for the technology-challenged like me) for an opt-in list of a little over 10,000

Well, if you have a list of around 10 thousand and you want to send emails to them, I would suggest you to opt for a Dedicated server. You will be able to install the applications you wish to have for sending emails. This will be possible as you will have Full root/ Administration access to your Dedicated server which will be fully managed i.e. you will be provided 24x7 support.

To take on a whole server for yourself, you had better have some heavy traffic of some sort or this can be a very expensive way to host your sites.
