Ping of Death is history now, all the new generation systems are not susceptible to Ping of Death. Ping of Death or POD was first came to into existence in the year 1996 on Unix systems. Within few weeks Unix community fixed up its systems to remove the weakness. However closed source operating systems like Windows and Mac remained susceptible to the POD for many years.

Ping of death (PoD) is an IP packet which is larger than 65,536 bytes which Hackers generally use to slow down the network. Ping of death is also know as Denial of Service (DoS) Attack. Ping of death are basically nasty as the identity of the attacker can be spoofed easily because the attacker does not any information except the IP address of the attacking machine. Patches were created by Operating System Vendors by the end of 1997 against PoD.
