Customer Loyalty

What ways have you found to develop customer loyalty? This is my main priority and I'm doing some research on it now. Anyone have any tips or hints?

If you want people to have any kind of loyalty towards you, you have to do something for them that they feel they can't get anywhere else or they have to feel that you have gone the extra mile for them. Give them something extra for being a dedicated customer, build rewards plans, maybe a discount, but give them something for nothing and I think they will feel more like a friend than a customer and that will keep their attention longer and that's loyalty.
