Default Which Forum Software?

Which forum software do you think is better? I'm looking at both VB and PHPBB. I don't have much experience with any type of forum software so any help would be great.

Hi techgirl,

I will recommend using vBulletin.

vBulletin is good (it's what the BODhost forum uses), but it is rather expensive. If you're willing to pay the license fee, though, then it's definitely a good choice.

phpBB is, some say, the leader in free forum software, but I disagree. Oh, sure, it's definitely popular, but I honestly don't like it all that much. phpBB3 is much better than previous versions, but the admin interface is still not very user-friendly in my opinion.

I would suggest you have a look at MyBB instead. It's very similar to vBulletin and is almost as good, but unlike vB, MyBB is free. Check it out, you might actually like it.

Thanks, I went and looked at the Mybb demo and It, in my opinion looks generic. As in free. I think I'll check out VBulletin a little more closely before deciding.

Well, if you're looking for good forum software then I suggest checking out the list at OpenSourceCMS. They have a pretty comprehensive list of many of the free forum software out there in the wild.

I use Vbullentin as it's the easiest for me. I did some checking before I decided on VBullentin and I'm glad that I did. Otherwise I might have went with one that wasn't the best fit and would have to figure out how to move things from one to the next.

Thanks Spooky, I'll be looking at OpenSourceCMS. I just want to know what all my options are, aside from the standard, VB and phpbb. Not that they are great, I just want to know ALL of the options.

I'm liking Advanced Electron Forum (AEF), so you might want to check it out. It's really very professional looking, one of the best I've seen so far. It's still quite new, so it's not as feature-filled as other forum scripts. Still, given some time and development, I think AEF could be really great.

Thanks Vertigo, I just went to AEF and chekced it out. It looks pretty good and is free. However, if you don't have hosting already you will need to secure hosting for them as it is not a free hosted forum like phpbb.

I am planning to download a forum site for free, and I've been eyeing Web Wiz Forums. I have studied the forum and it is full of features which includes Captcha security codes, WYSIWYG Post Writing Editor, forum polls, admin control panel and tools, calendar system, search tools, member features and more.
