Default How Many Sites?

I've been doing a heap of research into building my first site, but the more I learn, the more tempted I am to build more than one site. Does anyone here have more than one? How hard is it to maintain them ?

I also have multiple sites. Once you've done the hard work of setting them up it's easy from there to maintain or update. I say you should go for it.

Agreed. It is not really difficult to maintain more than 1 website or say multiple websites at the same time. However, some efforts are required for the same ;)

I think tons of people get into having just one site then realize if they can juggle the work (and have a decent host that makes managing it easier) then its possible. Some people just have really bad luck with one crappy host with one site that has tons of potential and they give up too soon.

I am thinking of starting another myself since I have a little extra free time, not sure what the theme will be just yet though.

Some professional webmasters handle more than one site and it depends on the webhosting package that they have purchased. Amateur webmasters take long to master handling their site such as learning HTML, PHP, Ajax, Javascript, MySQL database, editing webpages, uploading and downloading to the remote site, etc. before moving on to the next phase, which is to handle more than one site and repeat the overall process.

Even if you have one website, you should have a reliable web hosting provider. When it comes to managing multiple websites, your web host will really play a very important role. You should make sure that the support provided is quite good and also the servers are reliable enough as the data which is very important to you will be on the server.

I've wanted to make more than one website as well but I orignally start out with similar ideas and by the end of the month, they would be so far apart that I would not be able to keep up with both of them. I think it would be a good idea to create one, then start a second one.

Absolutely correct. Always better to start with one at a time. If you are new to this then, go for one at a time. Once you get better and gain some experience, it will be possible for you to start 2-3 at a time. Until then, Start with one at a time and the second later on.

I agree with the above. Never try to start two at a time. It will end up with you hurting your head and wanting to rip your computer apart. (Ive never done this...) But if you are making 2 similar sites, you could try using the same basic layout.

Indeed. Start with one website and learn the important steps required and once that is successful, proceed with another. I am sure once you start hosting more than 4 websites or with experience of 1 websites for more than two months, you won't have a problem with hosting and maintaining any number of websites.

Well, if your websites are simple blogs and you will only have some posts on each of them, you can surely start a number of blogs at a time. It is not difficult to manage a number of blogs at a time. However, you should be aware of the management techniques required for the same.

Time management is the key. If you are thinking of managing multiple blogs, then you just need to ensure that you include sufficient time to your schedule to take care of each blog to maintain its success.

Yes I agree with Macdale, to maintain blogs you should give few minutes everyday to maintain it and you can add atleast one article in each. This will definitely optimize the ranking as well as traffic.

Thumbs up

I appreciate your temptation to build multiple web sites, but would recommend you to start with one. Learn everything you can about its maintenance, upgradation and all the factors associated with it.Try to concentrate on the SEO aspect of the website in order to make this single website successful. Once your site starts getting indexed on the first page of the SE, you would be more enthusiastic about keeping it there at the top spot. Get ready for the hard work. Once your site becomes successful, in the mean time start working on the second website.

Excellent thoughts guys. Thanks for the feedback. I was really intimidated by the thought of having more than one site before, but I'll start thinking about a second while I'm building the first .

I have a number of blogs going now (blogger, squidoo, etc.). i am finding them useful as I am learning some basics about HTML and working on my ability to generate content for my future site.
