Is there anybody who can tell me about "cross linking". I have heard that it should be avoided for staying away from penalty. If this is so then what is the penalty for it.

Cross linking is done by person who is the owner of group of domains. In this case each domain he owns are linked to each other to increase the link popularity. Inter linking of web pages within the same website is also called as cross linking. The result of cross linking is dropping your site in search results or even getting banned.

I think the statement made by peter is very correct. Google may penalize you if you use such cross linking techniques. You may even get penalized if such excessive link techniques are used. Therefore it becomes necessary for you to either optimise your site for users or search engines to get higher ranking.
