Sorry bud, I have to disagree with you on that front - The world and his mother are currently web designer - there ain't many jobs about, no matter what your skill.
The way forward, is to make sure your into programming itself - Java, Ruby, ASP, PHP, .Net - and into databases, MySQL, Oracle etc etc.. Be at the front of webdesign in it's dynamic core - not it's interface. That will put you in good standing to get a job in the industry.

I was watching a programme the other day and some one made £120,000 off one website, the website was big and did seem like i would of taken a long time but thats a lot of money, i know a lot of people have a skill in this but a lot of people in my year wouldn't know where to start.

everyone with a computer can make basic websites, then theres a smaller amount of people who can make really impressive websites that look really good.
then you get the people who can make £120,000 websites.
that will be a lot more than just 'designing a site' - it will be designing the site, making it secure, making sure its secure, adding lots of custom written programs and functions particular to the clients wishes - and then again making sure its secure :P
as Jester said - you need to have all the skills that back up webdesign too if you want that big money. Not do disuade you though mate, if its your dream then of course you can achieve it. Just dont expect it to be easy :P

I think there may be an even bigger future market for professional web design and development work as people realize that simple do-it-yourself type sites just don't work. You need to be in fast lane to catch up with the latest web design trends.
It's how you adapt to those trends and stay in the competition. Website design is nothing more than pasting together some static information and pretty graphics for a lot of "designers" but it's really much more than that.

I've spent a fair while creating sites, I think i'm pretty good at it considering i'm self taught. However, I couldn't get a job as a web-designer.
As it happens, I quit my job recently - A went to University to studying computing. It's teaching me the elements of design and system analysis (and understanding what your customer wants) that I couldn't achieve by teaching myself.
Even though I know about Databases, I'm now learning the concept of data and information - and realising the planning and intergration of a database is more than just opening mySQL and creating a few tables. To get a job in the industry, it is more than just creating a nice web page with a few nice features.
It's about understanding the process of business, from the second you walk through your clients door, to the day they are satisifed with what you create.
I'm also doing a CCNA. That's giving me a completely different insight to web design from the side of the hardware and the actual infrastructure of how the net, or any LAN, runs.....
It's a big area out there mate - research it, choose your topic or area of interest, then go for it, learn everything about it... but there is a hell of a lot of work to do to be good and earn lots of money :D
