My preference is the dedicated server. Even I had taken a "small" dedicated box initially to the needs of the site. With a small dedicated hosting just one or two sites selling online products at the launch and it didn't crash even with 10,000 visitors. After seeing that you want to handle this yourself I'd suggest you to analyze your website's resource requirements carefully before going to decide hosting package.

Same thing I'd strongly recommend. However, you have to think about data backup solutions as well. In case you lose your orders data, it will ensures to restore everything as it before.

Yes, of course. A dedicated server should be given first preference when it comes to hosting an e-commerce site. Basically, an online shop gets large number of traffic in peak hours as well as on different occasions. It is very much necessary to have a future proof solution so that the products and information is delivered on time to the visitor. A dedicated hosting plan ensures that you website is available all the time and offers 100% uptime guarantee.

Also, in regards to sending of emails, it becomes easy to send lots of emails per hour, as a dedicated server would allow you to send up to 3600 emails per hour.

If dedicated server is out of option for any reason, a Cloud server is the best option. The reason for this is the fact that Cloud servers offer similar features of a dedicated server with 100% uptime guarantee. This is possible due to the Cloud server architecture. Cloud servers are setup on a cluster of servers i.e. a Cloud. Therefore, if one of the servers become unavailable, the Cloud servers are moved to the other servers in the Cloud by the Virtualization application.

Basically, the e-commerce sites are bit resources intensive and requires high availability solution to keep their website up and running 24x7. Since, a dedicated server would be solely dedicated to you, your website will be the only one which will be hosted on that server. In this way, you won't face any issue regarding server resources, server control and network uptime. Most of the e-commerce sites prefer to opt for a dedicated server solution.
