Hello, at the level of free tools to build your e-commerce site, you should pick open-source scripts such as OsCommerce and Magento. However, you must be aware that they require a lot of expertise to be implemented. In my opinion the most easily accessible shopping carts at small budget are ZenCart, Cube Cart, or Avactis Shopping Cart. But please understand that you will be needed relatively small changes in your site and "differentiation" that could bring you a custom development. I hope that answers your question with some answers. In any case, do not kid yourselves, you will never find a solution completely free ...

From what I have heard, the two leading open source scripts are OsCommerce and Magento. OsCommerce is not very well planned I think so, and Magento is a resource hungry. Have anyone tried both of these monster trucks?

Hello
I don't have any experience with osCommerce & Magento, but I would recommend you to install Joomla, then install free extension of virtuemart which is a real gas plant. However, you will need few weeks to get familiarize with its interface.

Do you have already used the Virtuemart extension for Joomla? Is it a good solution in your opinion? What are its limitations in your opinion?

I haven't used it for my website, but a friend of mine using Virtuemart. I am using Prestashop. However, initially I was mistaken and thought it is an evolution of OSCommerce in more light and efficient.

Hello,
I am a freelancer specialized in e-commerce open source, here is my opinion on different solutions.
Virtuemart & Joomla: a horror, especially not trying to have functionality or behave differently than the offer. Vulnerability in the long coding and difficult heavy management. For fans of this solution, I usually manage the support.
Oscommerce: script aging, poorly programmed at the base, short obsolete today.
Magento: great tool, complete and efficient, only catch is hosting a big, useless if you install it on a shared hosting account.
Prestashop: Some shortcomings of youth, but currently the best perspective, it is complete, fairly easy to use for a novice, and experts (PHP developer) can easily make or modules corrections. The community is quite dynamic.

Many shopping carts out there have free version, the Free Shopping Cart software from Avactis is a great way for any online merchant to start selling online without much investment. PHP-based, suitable for pretty much any modern hosting, embeddable in existing PHP sites, it can quickly get you started and very easy to use. And if you should need additional features of the full package, you can upgrade anytime without losing any data.
